Kybella is the newest injectable released by Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox, Voluma, and Juvederm. Kybella is FDA-approved for submental fat.

This is the fat that is located underneath the chin and on the upper neck. Kybella is composed of deoxycholine, which is a substance that occurs naturally in the body, and helps us to digest the fat we consume. In the case of injected deoxycholine, this substance is taken up very readily by the fat cells in order that they become swollen and die. As with any other dead cell in the body, it is removed through natural elimination processes.

A typical Kybella treatment include 2-4 injections of the product spaced approximately 4 weeks apart. The amount of the fat present on the inferior chin and neck will determine the number of injections. Each patient is different. With each injection, patients should expect bruising, post-treatment swelling which last 3-5 days and mild tenderness. A typical Kybella injection takes less than 15 minutes for the doctor to perform in the office. No anesthesia or topical numbing is required, but ice is typically preferred before and after each injection. A cosmetic consultation typically takes a few minutes, and is always complimentary in the office of Dr. Ellen Turner.
