RHA® Fillers

Get the First and Only Facial Fillers Designed for Improving Wrinkles Caused by Muscle Activity in the Dallas Area

Not all facial wrinkles are the same, so the best treatment for a specific sign of aging depends on how it was originally formed. Your face is constantly animated each day as tiny movements are made while talking, chewing, smiling, laughing, squinting, and making various expressions. Traditionally, facial fillers were only used for the static wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds, that are caused by collagen damage or loss and remain visible when your face is resting. Neuromodulators were the solution for the dynamic wrinkles associated with muscle activity around the eyes, nose, or mouth area, such as crow’s feet and frown lines. However, anti-aging treatments have continued to advance, and there’s a now a new way of using fillers on these areas of the face where muscles contract repeatedly throughout daily life: Revance Therapeutics’ RHA®. For Dallas-area patients, these innovative fillers are available from Dr. Ellen Turner and her experienced team—and are highly adaptable and create a subtle, natural-looking appearance both when the face is in motion and while it’s at rest.

What are RHA® Fillers?

Hyaluronic acid—also known as hyaluronan or HA—is a transparent, gluey substance that is present within the connective tissues of the body. The HA molecules retain large amounts of water, which keeps the skin soft and hydrated.

Many facial fillers are made with hyaluronic acid as their active ingredient. Unlike these other fillers, however, the RHA® collection is produced with leading edge, milder manufacturing techniques including fewer chemical modifications and a crosslinking method designed to make it a cleaner, more purified filler. The hyaluronic acid in RHA® fillers acts more like the natural version our skin contains.

The goal behind this processing method is to retain the natural structure of the hyaluronic acid as much as possible. The RHA® collection’s fillers are the first ever to be FDA-approved for the treatment of moderate to severe dynamic wrinkles.

Most conventional facial fillers will create a look that is noticeably rigid or “fake” if they are used in areas where there are dynamic wrinkles. However, the flexible RHA® filler gels adapt well to areas in motion and blend seamlessly into the existing tissue to allow for natural facial expressions.

Facial muscles are in seemingly constant motion, which causes dynamic wrinkles to form and become increasingly pronounced, especially around highly active areas like the mouth. The RHA® Collection at the Dallas area’s Dermatology Office is the first FDA-approved injectable dermal filler for addressing dynamic wrinkles. Its formulation is designed to more closely mimic the skin’s own hyaluronic acid, which makes it able to smooth lines and folds associated with muscle activity, all while maintaining a natural look.

Types of RHA® Fillers

There are three different formulas in the line, including:

    • RHA® 2, which is injected into a more superficial layer of skin for moderate dynamic wrinkles and perioral lines or radial cheek lines
    • RHA® 3, used to address moderate to severe wrinkles such as nasolabial folds and wrinkles around the corners of the mouth
    • RHA® 4, for treating severe wrinkles on the lower part of the face and for redefining facial contours

Am I a Good Candidate for RHA® Fillers?

Ideal candidates for these fillers include patients who are physically healthy, are nonsmokers, maintain realistic goals and a positive outlook, and are committed to caring for their skin. Patients who have allergies to the ingredients contained in RHA® will not be suitable candidates.

Each filler in the line has its own unique strengths, but as a whole, they are commonly used on nasolabial folds, perioral wrinkles, radial lines on the cheeks, and other wrinkles around the mid-face and mouth.

When Will I See the Results of RHA® Fillers, and How Long Will They Last?

Results from facial fillers appear right after the patient has been injected, though there may also be some initial swelling that can make the area look fuller than it will once the side effect resolves in a matter of days. The results of fillers in the RHA® collection can last for up to 15 months, depending on which specific filler is used and which part of the face is treated.

What Other Wrinkle Treatment Options Are Available?

Aside from RHA®, there are a variety of popular dermal fillers that are meant for areas of the skin that need more volume and lift, such as hyaluronic acid-based injectables like the Juvéderm® collection of products and Restylane® Lyft. These fillers are not only used for minimizing static wrinkles, but can also enhance the facial structure and contours or give the lips a poutier appearance. Other types of dermal fillers, such as Radiesse® and Sculptra®, are known as collagen stimulators because they not only add fullness to the skin but also gradually trigger collagen production.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is the most well known treatment for most types of dynamic wrinkles, working by temporarily relaxing the active muscles that cause the skin to bunch together on the surface.
