Introducing SkinMedica® Lytera 2.0

The newest product in the SkinMedica portfolio is the second generation of Lytera, a product developed for its skin brightening and even-ness of skin tone. Lytera 2.0 was released for distribution last week, only days before the SkinMedica Ambassador Summit in Newport Beach, California. A product which has been in research & development for the past three years, this new tool in the arsenal to fight pigmentation disorders has been anticipated for release for almost one year. Now it is here in January 2017! To date, there have been ten clinical trials to assess its effectiveness, going head to head with the gold standard skin lightening and brightening product, prescription-strength 4% hydroquinone. These clinical trials spanned all skin types and ethnicities, including patients with skin of color—a subtype of the population who seem to struggle much more with pigmentation issues. Trial sites included the U.S., Japan and Thailand. The product was examined on its own, as well as in combination with the retinols and with other office-based procedures such as chemical peels and laser treatments. Many women, more so than men, suffer from pigmentation issues. Described by patients in many different ways, words like blotchiness, staining, scarring, spotting, uneven skin […]

SkinMedica Physician Summit 2015

Last weekend I had the fortunate experience of attending my fourth annual SkinMedica Physician Summit. It is always a learning experience, and I am always so glad that I attend when I am lucky enough to be invited. What really struck a cord with me this year was the genuine camaraderie among these physicians. They all come from different areas around the country, from different backgrounds which led them to this point in their careers, and treat a variety of patients. Some are dermatologists, others are plastic surgeons, and then there are so many other variations on the same theme. They may have trained in emergency or family medicine, but they all share a common goal. They are trying to improve and maintain their patients’ health and their beauty. As I sat through lectures or listened to feedback and conversation in the small focus groups, or simply over dinner, the common theme to each of these amazing physicians’ success stories is one thing: patient relationships. These physicians remember each and every day, despite the frustrations that face them in regards to the new face of healthcare, the reason they went into this field was to help people, and to […]

My Favorite 7 Skincare Products in February 2014

#2 SkinMedica Body Lotion. I love this product and use it religiously on my arms and legs after I shower. Woe was me when I found out that the company is no longer going to be manufacturing it due to the low numbers of consumer purchasing. I still have some of this on my shelf, but I am sure I will run through that by the end of March and will then be in pursuit of another amazing body lotion. I just wish my fellow consumers would have picked up this ball and run with it…… #3 SkinMedica Lytera. I had used both Obagi Nu-derm and Obagi CRX systems in the past to good effect as I try to constantly combat this condition I hate so much –melasma or brown spots on the face. Living in Texas and loving the beach does not help either. However, it has become virtually impossible in Texas to obtain Obagi due to legislation passed that prohibit the distribution of prescription drugs such as hydroquinone (the active ingredient in Obagi) as well as certain other retinoids. Enter Lytera to the marketplace in late 2012. It was a new concept in lightening that was non-prescription and […]

SkinMedica VIP Summit 2014 Puerto Rico

The small skincare company out of San Diego has shown staggering growth by educating patients across the nation on the science, not the fashion, behind skincare. Skincare is such a huge industry, and people can simply be overwhelmed with the sheer volume of information, labels, categories and so forth that are thrown out there. The result is typically purchase paralysis. To avoid this, SkinMedica has become a national leader in teaching physicians how to teach their patients about skincare.  When the Allergan acquisition occurred, the larger parent company did not insist on doing things “their way” but rather allowed this company to flourish. Even better, Allergan pushed a huge amount of budget dollars into the research and development of the SkinMedica umbrella. This means that 2014 will only be the beginning of continuing the advancements they have already made in skincare. There were two great takeaways from this year’s summit. One was a study that was fairly sizeable—about 75 patients were included. These patients were all true Californians, which in this case, was quite similar to my Texas patients. These patients had a lot of sun damage, both the naked eye, and on a microscopic level. They had a lot […]
