Volbella for a Natural Looking Lip Augmentation

Volbella launched in the last quarter of 2016, but it is still not as well-known as its predecessors, Juvederm and Voluma. Volbella is a hyaluronic acid product, similar to its family members of Juvederm and Voluma, but it has a completely different cross-linkage that allows for decreased viscosity but excellent longevity—around 18 months. Volbella was created as an option for filling very superficial fine lines as opposed to deeper or more coarse wrinkles or folds. I like Volbella best for the patient who is starting to see a decline in their lip volume, which is a normal part of the aging face, but which makes the patient start to have thin lip as opposed to a normal one. Patients who have never used lip filler before are quite hesitant to move forward for the primary reason they do not wish to look artificial or fake. They like their lips in their natural state, but unfortunately time marches on. I like to explain that by selecting the proper filler and using the proper filling technique, Volbella is the best option for a patient who desires their own natural and subtle lip, and without the unwanted “plump” lip appearance. I also really […]

Prevent, Protect, and Repair | Introducing SkinMedica’s Lumivive System

SkinMedica launched a new product system in the fall of 2018 which is really a first-in-class skincare product. Lumivive, contains a day and a night serum, which specifically targets the issue of blue light damage and environmental pollution.  The Lumivive system is designed to prevent, protect, and repair the damage from constant blue light damage we encounter through daily use of our cell phones, tablets, and computers. Some cars even contain larger blue lights which help us to do everything from changing the radio station to navigation, to using the hands-free mechanism on our phones.  Additionally, we have environmental pollution. Granted, in the U.S. we are much more fortunate than our Asian and European counterparts, due in a large part to the lesser amount of diesel fuel used but in metropolitan areas such as Dallas, it is an issue, and one to consider as we are seeing evidence of skin-aging and even skin conditions such as acne and other inflammatory conditions.  Lumivive Day Serum is the perfect blending of antioxidants designed to prevent the damage created from both blue light and environmental pollution. Lumivive Night Serum has a different formulation designed to correct and repair any damage which may […]

How a healthy gut can keep you fit!

As we enter 2019, I often hear an individual’s new years’ resolution is to lose the weight. I myself have resolved to do this both in the new year, as well as throughout the year whenever a big event will occur in which I am going to wear a special outfit, or if I am going to be seeing someone I have not seen in a while. Obviously, we all want to put our best foot forward so to speak. Over the past year, I have worked and studied diligently on an extension of traditional medicine now termed functional medicine. I am still a dermatologist at heart, but I can augment the care of the skin by looking at the individual as a whole. I have begun to talk more and more about use things like daily multivitamins, probiotics and fish oil for all healthy adults over the age of 18. I have also begun to look past the skin to the gut for answers to common skin problems.  We know that the entryway to the body is through the gut. From there, every other organ is affected—either positively or negatively, including the skin. We ingest foods, and depending […]

Pioneering Radiofrequency Microneedling for Skin Rejuvenation

Radiofrequency microneedling, an advancement from traditional microneedling, has taken skin rejuvenation, repair and tightening to the next level, but while simultaneously decreasing the recovery times seen with laser devices that may create similar great results, but with longer healing times. Radiofrequency microneedling utilizes spaced fine stationary needles which are applied directly into the skin, and followed by an immediate pulse of radiofrequency energy. Depending on whether the needles utilized are insulated or non-insulated, will determine whether the treatment is more customized to deeper skin tightening and lifting (non-insulated), or whether the channels created (insulated) will allow better penetration of topical products applied directly to the skin surface which are easily absorbed into these channels for clinical effect. It is through both the puncture of these fine needles, as well as the heat or thermogenic effects of the radiofrequency pulse, that collagen III can be replicated. Collagen III is the primary molecule which continues to decrease with aging of the skin. It also is complete lacking in scarring processes. The type of issues which radiofrequency microneedling targets range from surgical or acne scars to skin tightening and rejuvenation of sag, lines, and wrinkles, as well as interruption of the sweat glands […]

Permanent Treatment to Excessive Sweating – RF Microneedling

Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, is a real issue for some people. I have patients that come to me and state that they are unable to wear particular clothes because the problem of excessive sweating is so real, they are painfully embarrassed with the potential resulting appearance. I also have heard patients state that they must bring a change of clothes to work at their desk job because the hyperhidrosis is such as real issue that they cannot wait until they get home at the day’s end. In today’s world, hyperhidrosis should no longer be a difficult clinical issue to treat. We have long had traditional approaches to therapy such as Robinul, clinical strength antiperspirants, and topical aluminum chloride. Approximately a decade ago, Botox gained approval for hyperhidrosis of the underarms (also known as axillary region), but most insurance plans do not cover this issue, considering it to be elective as a treatment option, even when they have failed the traditional approach to hyperhidrosis. Later, a device known as MiraDry, was used to more permanently eliminate the issue of excessive sweating under the arms. However, it was not always effective, and the cost was not only prohibitive to the patients, but […]
