I sat towards the back of the room because I walked in a bit late, and seating was limited but the topic looked intriguing. I figured, “why not?” and headed in. The speaker had already taken the podium, and was talking about her journey from BareMinerals to Colorescience. The year was 2012.
“Mineral sunscreen is difficult to work with. It’s expensive to get it right. After Bare Minerals acquired my line, Colorescience became my new project. And Sunforgettable is its hero product.”
The woman speaking from the podium was Diane Ranger, the inventor of powder sunscreen.
The same person who coined the phrase mineral makeup.
The creator of Colorescience, a product line which launched in 2000, and was later sold to SkinMedica and then rebranded and restructured under CEO, Mary Fisher to the company it is today.
How Does Sunforgettable SPF Work to Protect the Skin for Harmful UV Rays?
Diane Ranger asked us to picture a pool table with its green felt. The physical size of each of the minerals is different. Imagine if the entire pool table was covered with pool balls. We could still see the green felt, couldn’t we? These pool balls were like zinc oxide.
Now imagine if we took marbles and covered the same pool table with both the pool balls AND the marbles. It is likely we would cover almost the entire green felt table with balls, but some green felt might still peek through. These marbles are represented by titanium oxide.
Now take ball bearings and throw them on top of the pool table and fill in any remaining gaps. These ball bearings would be represented by iron oxide. No green felt would be seen because all of the minerals varied in size and were coated with a patented technology.
Colorescience Sunforgettable is a first in class, physical block powder sunscreen composed of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. The third and final mineral, iron oxide, achieves the desired color– fair, medium, tan or dark–depending on the concentration. The three minerals shield from harmful UVA and UVB rays of light, blue light, and pollution. The coverage is so broad, a new term was created by the Colorescience team to better encompass the meaning of true protection achieved by this pioneering company in physical block protection: enviroscreen.
All of Colorescience products are free of dyes, perfumes, talcs or fillers, and parabens. The Colorescience Sunforgettable brush is sweat resistant and water resistant. In fact, all Colorescience products have the highest water resistance rating.
The powder technology of Sunforgettable makes it unique for application and re-application, an especially desirable characteristic in athletes of either sex, or females who wear makeup. It is the premier sunscreen for sensitive skin types due to the limited number of ingredients and complete lack of chemicals. Children are not averse to using it because, well, who doesn’t love a soft brush against their skin? And if kids love it, moms love it too.
Back in 2012, I had just learned to shop on my iPhone. A dangerous habit. Before Diane Ranger had even finished her presentation, I placed my first Colorescience Sunforgettable sunscreen in my cart and pressed Purchase. The rest was history.
Ever since that day I have never stopped talking about it to my patients.
