Why Are My Brown Spots Getting Darker Even Though I’m Wearing Sunscreen?

Every summer, I hear the same question:

“Why are my brown spots getting darker even though I’m wearing sunscreen?”

The answer surprises a lot of people.

It’s not just the sun.

Melasma and pigmentation before and after treatment

Heat itself can increase pigmentation. We used to focus almost exclusively on UV exposure, but we now know that heat can stimulate melanocytes, the cells that make pigment. That’s one reason melasma can flare after a day at the pool, sitting on the sidelines at a soccer tournament, or even just spending time outdoors in a Texas summer.

That’s why treating pigmentation isn’t just about one laser or one skincare product. It’s about having a strategy.

So here’s what I’m doing for my own skin this summer.

My Summer Pigmentation Strategy

HALO and Pico laser treatment

Alternating HALO® and Pico Laser Treatments

I’m alternating HALO® and Pico laser treatments every two weeks.

HALO helps improve years of accumulated sun damage while stimulating new collagen and improving overall skin quality. Pico works differently. It breaks up unwanted pigment with incredibly short pulses of energy, allowing your body to naturally clear the pigment with minimal surrounding heat.

I like combining the two because they complement each other. One improves the quality of the skin, while the other aggressively targets pigment. Together, they keep my complexion looking brighter and more even throughout the summer.

The Most Important Step: Daily Sun Protection

But here’s the part that’s even more important than lasers.

Every morning, I layer my sun protection.

I start with a mineral sunscreen containing zinc oxide, and if I’m going to be outside, I reapply regularly. I’ll often add a mineral SPF powder during the day because it’s easy, doesn’t ruin makeup, and gives me another layer of physical protection.

No laser can outwork unprotected sun exposure.

And while sunscreen is essential, don’t forget about hats, sunglasses, UPF clothing, and finding shade whenever you can. Those simple habits make every treatment work better and every result last longer.

Every Patient Needs a Personalized Plan

One thing I’ve learned after treating pigmentation for years is that no two patients have the same problem. Freckles, sun spots, melasma, post-inflammatory pigmentation, they may all look brown, but they don’t behave the same way. That’s why the best treatment plan is rarely just one treatment.

For many patients, the best results come from combining technology with medical-grade skincare and consistent sun protection.

Summer doesn’t have to mean darker spots and uneven skin.

It just means your skin needs a smarter plan.

I’m rotating HALO with Pico every two weeks and layering physical-block SPF every single day.
